Thank you everyone, teachers, students, professionals and enthusiasts in Harvard University today. We are gathered here together; it is an honor to be invited to speak at Harvard University. Harvard University is one of the best universities in the world and a very admired university. The day before yesterday, I was invited to the Rhode Island School of Design to share "My Entrepreneurship Story and Design Benefit Points". My speech at Harvard University, it is more about starting from the miracle of design benefits: driving the wave of innovation in the global industry.
In the current era of AI artificial intelligence, I feel it is very important to talk about the benefit points of design. When it comes to the benefit points of design, I have to start with my artistic enlightenment. I drew at the age of 3, encouraged by my mother. I was successfully admitted to the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, because If you treat something as your own interest, you will definitely be able to do it well. This is very important. During my university years, in order to achieve my professional goals, I diligently engaged in specialized training while simultaneously integrating the acquisition of societal knowledge. I not only devoted significant time to academic studies but also actively participated in various design competitions and engaged in diverse social practices. Ultimately, I was honored with prestigious accolades such as top-tier scholarships and first-class awards. As graduation approached, I took on part-time work outside of campus and held the position of Deputy General Manager at a company. Despite the demanding workload, I approached each design project with enthusiasm and dedication. Following graduation, I pondered on how to evolve into a seasoned designer. I worked diligently until 11 PM every night for three consecutive years. Additionally, I spent my weekends at the electronics market, immersing myself in products from renowned brands such as Panasonic, Electrolux, Samsung, and HP, etc. My persistence paid off when I received a lucrative job offer from another company. However, I opted to remain at my current position, continuing to work as the Deputy General Manager. With time and a growing passion for design, I ultimately decided to embark on an entrepreneurial journey. This decision led to the successful establishment of Califor Design Company.
Through business operation and accumulation, Califor Design also owns an office building by our own name in the center of Shenzhen.
Califor Design serves clients such as the former CEO of Apple, Panasonic, China Tobacco, China Resources, etc., and has won many international and domestic design awards, and the team members are from the United States, the United Kingdom, China and other places.
In the design process, we must consider the entire life cycle of the product, from raw materials and manufacturing processes to use, maintenance and final disposal, all the way through the theory of design benefit points. Let's take a look at some of our innovative ideas for our works.
Case 1:Panasonic
The all-digital welding machine, we designed for our customers responds to the application needs of the global market, showed the world's first sports car digital concept in appearance, making the visual image more lightweight. In addition, we designed a welding wire window visualization on the upper part of it, this is also based on the user's pain point of "always opening the welding wire spool to see the remaining amount of welding wire", and cleverly use the visual window to optimize the user experience.
Case 2:Foot Mouse-Operate the mouse with the foot
This is a mouse, we designed for users with arm disabilities and neurological disorders that result in the inability to use their hands. What sets it apart from a traditional mouse is that it is a specialized mouse controlled by the feet instead of the hands. Drawing inspiration from the insole features of athletic shoes, it can effectively conform to the complex contours of the foot, ensuring that users do not feel tired or uncomfortable during use; in terms of functionality, it incorporates the standard features of a traditional mouse, including left and right buttons as well as a scroll wheel, making it suitable for general work tasks and some online gaming operations.
Finally, I hope that today’s miracle of design benefit points can bring you some inspiration and enlightenment. I hope that all of us will embrace the collaboration between AI intelligence and human design, create a new wave of innovation in various industries, and contribute our design power to our human lives, industry development, and sustainable social development. I wish you all a wonderful time in Harvard University. Let us use our wisdom to grasp the present together, find suitable benefit points, let us change the world together and embrace the future.
After Liang (Leon) Liu's keynote speech at HarvardUniversity, the organizer invited both Liang and Professor Matthew S. Kressy, Founding Director, MIT Integrated Design & Management (IDM) Master's Program, for a panel discussion and interactive Q&A session with the attendees.
Participants deeply felt the charm of how the miracle of design benefit points can promote business success. Through the power of design, the benefits point of the product are presented in depth, and people's expectations for a better life and excellent products are realized with the power of design. Through guidance from a high position and detailed interpretation of work cases, participants enjoyed a spiritual feast.
